The Making of a LEGEND…

There are a great deal of “firsts” in the long history of African Americans in this country. And with each one, a brand-new plateau of equality and acceptance was achieved. It can also be stated without exception that each one came at a price for the brave individuals who battled tough to improve the lives of their people and accomplish that fantastic breakthrough in their picked field.
These principles are definitely real in the arena of sports and specifically baseball. Baseball has long been considered the terrific American leisure activity.
On April 15th, 1947 when Jackie Robinson walked out onto the field to be the first black to shatter the color barrier in expert baseball in a video game in between his team, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Braves, he was making a significant declaration.

At ballparks all across the majors Thursday, April 15, 2004, fans and players got to see and hear about the Hall of Famer Robinson’s legacy. Baseball paused for Jackie Robinson Day, with video tributes, speeches and commemorative No. 42 signs honoring the man who broke the sport’s color barrier.

This was no day of parades and celebration for Robinson. He was a remarkable baseball player. While Jackie played with the Dodgers, they went to the World Series 6 times and he made his presence known in 6 all star games.

FACED DISCRIMINATION on BASIS OF RACE

As it is an often case, that it took some brave leadership skills from advocates outside of the African American neighborhood to make sure that prejudice would not keep a brilliant player such as Jackie Robinson from reaching his full potential. When some of the Brooklyn Dodger team members refused to sit next to Jackie Robinson and showed other hostile attitudes towards him because he belonged to a different race, management persevered that if they could not become a team with all members of the club, they were welcome to go play baseball in other places.

JACKIE ROBINSON’s CHARACTER

Jackie himself never build his baseball career about race. Although it was seemingly hard to avoid the outside noise. He never payed attention to other’s opinions and continued to work on his craft. He chose to demonstrate considerably what Dr. Martin Luther King later described when he stated that the day needs to come when we evaluate a guy not by the color of his skin however by the content of his character. Jackie Robinson made his stand for equality by showing that at the heart of his character was a superior baseball player and a valued member of the baseball community.

Even when Robinson spoke of his days pioneering baseball for other African Americans, his words demonstrated that he only wanted the opportunity to be checked fairly along side all other professional athletes, no more and no less. His basic declarations really summarized a lot of what the civil rights movement was all about when he stated, “You can dislike a male for many reasons, color is not one of them.” And later in his career he specified it once again wonderfully when he stated, “I’m not interested in your taste or disliking me … all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”

This focus on the individual, on the quality of all males and all Americans and their right to be evaluated for who they are as individuals, exempt to prejudice as African Americans is an ideal summation of the struggle of African Americans everywhere.

A movie have been made on his life which depicts his struggle in the path of becoming a player in dodgers and describes racism that a black person had to deal with back in the days.
