The Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) are a series of international e-sports tournaments held in countries around the World.

Just like the major leagues of different sports such as Barclays, PSL and others, the IEM is the super league for the world of e-sports.

Founded in 2007, these ESL sanctioned events, sponsored by Intel, include various gaming events including Starcraft 2, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Quake Live, League of Legends and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

The league has organized ten seasons including that of 2016. Previous events have been held in cities including Chengdu, Dubai, LA and most recent Katowice, Poland.

IEM is actually product of ESL when Intel sponsored European tournaments and saw room for expansion outside of Europe, especially in North American markets.

Intel provided funds for a Worldwide tournament, billing it as the Intel Extreme Masters.
